EDUCATIONAL EVALUATIONS
For Reading, Writing, Math, and Attentional Problems
Psychologist Background
Dr. Zieman took his masters degree in School Psychology with a concentration
in reading disorders. Dr. Zieman also comes from a family with many
learning and school problems. As a high school and college student he was a tutor
in a public elementary school and a family member attending school special education meetings.
The Assessment Process
Evaluations are comprehensive and designed
to give a thorough assessment of
cognitive functioning, academic skills, and information processing abilities which are
important to school success. Each evaluation ends with a discussion of
recommendations regarding remedial efforts to undertake (in and outside the classroom),
supplemental support ideas, and coping strategies. While each evaluation is significantly
customized, the typical evaluation consists of:
- The family is sent a packet of history forms and rating scales to complete
before the initial office meeting. Included are materials for teachers to
complete and mail back.
- Office appointments begin with a parent interview to learn the specific needs.
- A review is done of past evaluations, report cards, and samples of current school work.
- An individual intelligence test is administered (consisting of 10 or more
subtests) to establish baseline functioning for skills in many daily life areas.
- Specific Information Processing/Neuropsychological skills important to
academic success are tested, including:
- visual perception
- visual-motor integration (important for handwriting and neatness of work)
- visual working memory (important in spelling and reading sight words)
- auditory working memory (important in phonics and following oral directions)
- Focused testing is done to assess:
- phonetic reading and spelling skills
- visual/sight word reading and spelling
- oral reading and reading fluency
- reading comprehension
- nonphonetic spelling
- written expression (including writing mechanics such as punctuation)
- handwriting and spacing/ neatness of written work
- understanding of mathematical concepts
- arithmetic computational skills
- Screening is done for common overlapping problems such as problems with
attention and difficulties with fine and gross motor skills.
- The results are interpreted with an emphasis on
discussing recommendations regarding remedial efforts to undertake (in and outside the
classroom), supplemental support ideas, and coping strategies.
- A full written report (5-7 pages) is provided giving the test scores, conclusions,
and recommendations.
Evaluations involve testing in two multi-hour sessions plus an interpretation
session with parents to discuss the results and recommendations.
